May 8, 2022Â title alone is enough to hold my interest, but beyond that, I am so impressed by this album....it manages to feel like one of the greatest mix-tapes (or CDs) ever made, while also maintaing a cohesive sound, the kind of balancing act that only Yo La Tengo can pull off. I have a feeling this album will be talked about for years

May 29, 2020Beautiful. Captures a little bit of their edgy grungy sound with their more soothing melodic pieces. They were back in form on their 90s form on this one

RobbieCSep 14, 2007More totally entrancing and exciting and expectation-shattering with every song. At the same time, it's good ol' yo la tengo. Absolutely brilliant. My second favorite album from YLT, one of the greatest ever.

RobertHJun 22, 2007An album as awesome as its name!

BobCMay 15, 2007Very different from prior Cds. I think it's their best work.

-
KitTMay 3, 2007I don't think I've heard anything so colourful and melodic recently. The range is awesome, from heavy riffings to sweet mellow poppy tunes, somehow they all fit well in the album. Nothing short of brilliant.

NikkiGApr 15, 2007Very chill album to lounge around and listen to!

jeremyJan 12, 2007Best since Electr-o-pura (which just happens to be a top 10 all-time album for me).

NikDec 21, 2006A very solid album, I will just leave it at that.

-
AjaxDec 20, 2006Not their best album but when you have as strong a catalogue as YLT it doesn't need to be to beat off all competition this year. At no point does it feel overlong or anything other than brilliant.

ReubenFDec 18, 2006A good album, but I suspect they are mostly still benefiting from the cult status amongst critics they acquired from their 2000 album "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out." However, a few songs on this LP do recapture the sound of that classic, most notably 'Sometimes I Don't Get You'.

KevinRSep 23, 2006Quite possibly the best album of the year. The songs flow well and it is always interesting. Almost every song is a highlight. Definitely one of the best albums of recent memory.

JamesWSep 22, 2006I caught a short set culled from this album at the Pitchfork Festival this summer. Now that the tunes have settled into my brain cells, I can't wait for their return to Chicago in a couple of weeks. Is it just me, or does "Black Flowers" channel the Kinks at their most wistfull? Great work, YLT!

KevinMSep 16, 2006Beanbag Chair is insanely catchy. The album creates a very cohesive mood, feel good album of the year.

-
DavidSep 16, 2006"Pass The Hatchet" is Yo La Tengo stealing "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" from Wilco and "The Story Of Yo La Tengo" steals the guitar part from Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing," but every other song is absolutly wonderful and the previously mentioned songs still come out as great songs.

MattD.Sep 14, 2006Comparisons to sprawling albums like The White Album are correct. But the music is unique.

-
ChrisCSep 14, 2006Instantly an amazing album. And I even hated the last Yo La Tengo album I bought. (The 2000 one.) And, best title ever.

MESep 14, 2006Popmatters gave it a 9 not an 8 ??!!
