There’s a minimalism in places here that even ardent fans might find a touch disappointing given how predisposed she normally is to extrapolating on her ideas. In fairness, though, the whole point of Documents is to capture the sound of a band, still hot from the road, bringing that energy to the studio. In the Same Room delivers.

A perfect starting place for Holter neophytes, In The Same Room doesn't really add much to her extant discography. [Apr 2017, p.96]

It rearranges songs from the back catalogue into both psychologically probing dream-pop and freer, almost meteorological expressions. [May 2017, p.104]

This album is a very good listen as Julia is placed in a live setting, having her to rely on the raw performance of her voice and the instruments rather than relying on lavish production in the studio. It is very satisfying to hear her sound stripped down and have her unafraid to take risks as she very easily steps out of her alluring and often spaciness into a monstrous and grand sound. There are moments on this album that don't really contribute anything to the live atmosphere and can be enjoyed to the same extent as heard on the albums which may be a bit underwhelming and doesn't make it a perfect live album. Overall this was an album I enjoyed listening to and had enough to offer to keep me interested throughout as I loved hearing her ability to work and intertwine a often improvised sounding backing band with her angelic voice. Unlike the studio versions of these songs, the focus is less on Holter's individual musical vision and more on the creative breakthroughs that arise from her collaboration with her fellow musicians after touring together. Many might prefer these versions to the originals. Full Review »
