Carlile effortlessly glides between octaves while, somehow, still sounding completely conversational — the everyday diva we didn’t know we needed until she showed up at the door. Fans of the singer-songwriter sensibilities of the 1970s will especially find a lot to love in the rich variety of material in “In These Silent Days,” which, under the expert co-production of Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings, certainly sounds analog-era, however it was recorded.

Seven albums in, Carlile has long since proven herself constitutionally incapable of making a bad record. She's not about to start now.

This is, in every way, a crowning affair, one that’s destined to be considered a high point in Carlile’s ever-expansive career. It’s little wonder then that In These Silent Days consistently speaks volumes.

It all adds to yet another triumph for this singular artist, a preeminent voice of our times whose command of vocal and musical dynamics is the perfect complement for both her straightforward and oft ambiguous lyrics.

The anticipated follow-up to her Grammy-winning masterstroke, 2018’s By The Way, I Forgive You, is once again magnificent — a triumphant patchwork of Americana, folk-rock, pop and soul anchored by yet another show-stopping centerpiece in “Right on Time,” the album’s towering lead single.

Carlile has been making high-quality music for years, and In These Silent Days adds to that legacy. The songwriting is so good throughout, and Cobb and Jennings’ production is spot-on. ... Regardless of genre, though, this record deserves recognition as being one of the year’s best.

The songs are introspective, reflective and fretful. ... It's best moments are its quieter ones. [Nov 2021, p.26]

Man, how not to forget such a piece of wonder, and that positive things are recovered from pain. Now, she is cured. Yes. More than something personal, it's about sharing the various teachings ("Letter To The Past"), opening your heart for the good ones ("This Time Tomorrow") and the bad ones ("When You're Wrong"). There's a certain ecclesiastical quality not only with "Throwing Good After Bad", but with the entire album. A stairway to what can be the afterlife.

fav tracks: "Righ on Time", "Broken Horses", "Letter To The Past", "You and Me On The Rock" & "Stay Gentle"
    KEY-TRACK: "Sinners, Saints and Fools"

Reading all the raves, I'm confused. I find her over the top quavering voice so affected and manipulative that it's hard to listen to. Glad the others are enjoying this, but count me out. Expand
