Even though Information Retrieved is an excellent album, it won't do a whole lot to win over anyone who has already decided that Pinback isn't for them. For everyone else, the album delivers plenty of the gloomy/sunny/plaintive/happy pop that has made them one of the more instantly recognizable bands in the indie landscape.

[Listening to the album is like] a reunion with an old friend, but not necessarily a close one. For half an hour, you think "why don't we do this more often?" until it ends and you remember how frustrating they can be.

For an album of such wide-open sounds and ideas, Information Retrieved has a true knack for living in, and succeeding on, the smallest of details.

Information Retrieved achieves an interesting balance between showcasing Pinback's unique take on classic indie rock and offering something that's immediately familiar, something with the air of an old acquaintance.

Even at its coolest, Pinback's music has never felt cold. Information Retrieved, though, rarely rises above lukewarm.

From start to finish, Information Retrieved sounds confident and deliberate, a consummate release from two deft musicians who've made every note count.

While it may be an album with a fairly prescribed pattern, it's one that is done so well and embellished so cutely, that it leaves you feeling an enormous sense of contentment.

The highs are higher, the lows are lower and what resonates in the middle is a frontrunner for one of the best summer-transitions-into-fall records that you'll hear in a long, long time. [Nov 2012, p.94]

Information Retrieved's value lies in its stark denial of what fashionable indie rock is these days; it's an admirable and frustrating time warp to the days when Sunny Day Real Estate were cutting edge.

Californian duo's first LP for five years is a downbeat delight.

The change becomes Pinback rather well, with newfound self-assurance adding warmth to their melodic nous: sweet and soulful.

for me this is probably Pinback's weakest proper album but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, the other albums are amazing and 10/10 classicsfor me this is probably Pinback's weakest proper album but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, the other albums are amazing and 10/10 classics so this only being a 8/10 album seems weak in comparison, they set the bar too high and so there was always that risk we'd be disappointed. If you were a fan of their earlier work, you'll love this album. If there were any negatives it would be that it's too similar to the older albums, but I'm ok with that. Full Review »
