Internal Sounds is a sparkling conflation of '69-vintage Byrds, early Burritos and psychedelic country helped along by the odd splash of boiling surf. [Oct 2013, p.74]

Internal Sounds both solidifies and expands on the veteran group’s signature tone, beefing up the punk-infused, psych-rock twang without losing any of the technical mastery and subtle nuances of the playing.

The closer, We Are Circling (featuring Buffy Sainte-Marie), acts as a coda, binding the whole concept together, underlining the sacredness of family, community, music-making and the passage of time.

This album may be a little unfocused, but it reveals mire and more with each listen. [Feb 2014, p.94]

Internal Sounds is full of endings and beginnings, with cinematic instrumental act breaks, twangy fist- pumpers ("The First 5 Minutes"), muscular power pop ("Another Tomorrow Again") and haunting drones (the excellent closer, "We Are Circling").

The album does reveal their wide influences across tracks rather than within them. For a band not as tight, that could have made for a scattershot album, but this one coheres nicely.

The Sadies can still sound like the best rock 'n' roll band in the world, but here. for all their brilliance, they miss that steadying hand. [No. 103, p.60]

Trad country and honky tonk duke it out with outlaw attitude and roadhouse rock, a high ground meeting point between early R.E.M. and Drive-By Truckers. [Feb 2014, p.120]
