I think overall the album was great. One thing I really want to point out tho is that people/fans really disliked the Revival album and said that they wanted Slim Shady back. Then came out Kamikaze which actually IS more like Slim Shady and it gets a lot of bashing again for being too angry, dissing etc. I think this is a bit sad and that Em really tries to put out music that he thinks his fans will like...and they still want something else. I hope the majority of people who listen to this album get how genius it is. Expand

Agressive Eminem is back with "Kamikaze", a 13-song, 46 minute album.

The skits with Paul Rosenberg are well-implemented as well, a nice change in a time where skits are slowly disappearing.

But besides the highlights there are also some forgettable tracks, which don't add much to the album. If these were to be cut, it would be a 8/10 album. But for now, a 6/10 is a fair rating to me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Kamikaze really is a return to form of old Eminem. A lot of the songs hit hard lyrically and most of his songs in the past are just that, deep hard hitting songs. If you listen carefully to his lyrics and look up the meaning to those lyrics you appreciate how important Em is to the hip-hop scene that has been overly saturated by mumble rap in which he focuses his rage towards. People that say "this album isn't anything special" and "he just raps fast woopdidoo" don't understand true hip-hop and how powerful the words that are spoken are. People like that just want a catchy beat with lyrics that don't mean anything.

Get this album if you want to listen to real hip-hop with meaningful lyrics. You won't be disappointed.

Em needed to bounce back after Revival and he did just that with Kamikaze. He comes out swinging with bars that remind me of vintage Shady. I've seen people saying that he came off as petty for taking shots at the younger generation but Em is at his best when he's **** on other people. Going forward I'd like to see more emphasis on the musicality but overall I was very pleased.

This is Eminem's best album since The Eminem Show. Some hooks could be done better, but the wordplay on this is out of his world. Plus, he got his lost identity back (since Recovery), what made his albuns since then decay in quality (Recovery, MMLP2, Revival). 8 for the album + 2 for going at mumblerap.

The main criticism of this album has been that Em sounds like hes 'wining' instead of firing back. But the 'come and get me attitude' from the old Slim Shady era has returned and overrides any sense of 'wining' that people may focus on.

This album is not the best hip hop album of the year but it is probably the most lyrically impressive, and certainly Eminem's best for a while.

Some of the greatest work Em has ever delivered with two songs in particular (the Ringer and Lucky You) that will comfortably slot into his all time top ten.

What makes reviewing Eminem albums a challenge is that we compare it to his previous work. So if you listen Kamikaze pretend you don't know who Eminem is, adn this album exists in a vacuum. Does that maker it better or worse? I would argue it seriously improves what I think of the album. But I understadn albums don't exist in a vacuum. And by comparing it to other previous works it ends up seeming okay. He's one of the greatest hip hop aritst of a generation adn that's what we compare it to. While the Ringer is the most talked about song, Fall has to be my favorite track on the whole record. It comes back with the "don't give a **** attitude that i personally love from Eminem.

Unfortunately the album loses value, with basically garbage songs, like Normal and Nice Guy, Normal is so awkward, and it feels so out of place on this album. Nice Guy is completely terrible, Jessie Reyez voice is unlistenable to, and i did myself a favor to actually delete that track as i never want to see it again.

The song Venom doesn't belong here, even though it isn't a bad song. It'd be better to just release as a standalone, and the remix for Chloraseptic would make more sense being there

But i think the good clearly outweighs the bad, The highlights are to high for the lows to even matter, too much.

The album opens up with the song 'The Ringer,' and in that song Em says everything he needs to say. He disses the critics, the new wave of rap and most interestingly, calls anyone who disliked Revival a dunce who isn't smart enough to understand the context and wordplay of the terrible rap/rock album. The next 10 songs and 40+ minutes waste your time by saying much of the same thing, in less tack full ways. By the end of it Shady just seems like an old man yelling and complaining about what kids do for fun and like just because it wasn't what he did for fun when he was younger.

Surprised to see so many people calling this an Eminem 'comeback'. Honestly, that phrase is a bit of an oxymoron used in this context because Em isn't 'coming back' from anything, he's just producing more of the same WASHED music. The biggest problems of this album are just the incessant screaming at the mic and his desire to explain verbatim every single thing that upsets him. I call it 'Dad Rap' and others such as Jay Z are guilty in their older years of falling into that trap (though Hov has never put out trash comparable to this). Use metaphors and creativity Em, you don't have to be RIGHT ON THE NOSE with every single lyric. It's disappointing to see a legend release music of this poor a quality but father time is undefeated. I think Em should just do a couple guest spots a year until he has something original to say again. Expand

Revival wasn't that bad. Kamikaze really brings back the nostalgic Slim Shady vibe though. "The Ringer", "Greatest", "Lucky You" , "Stepping Stones, "Fall", and "Not Alike" are all great tracks. The digs at the current state of hip-hop feel refreshing when you realize how watered down and mumbly rap has become.

Eminem has really lost the plot in recent years, and this album is unfortunately more of the same. The entire album is made up of diss tracks where Eminem moans about people he doesn't like and the poor reception of his last album, Revival. It seems that Eminem loves playing the victim and, while he may feel aggrieved, I'm not sure it warranted the creation of an entire album to that effect. In fact, the whole thing reeks of desperation - a declining artist with delusions of grandeur and relevance trying to recapture his glory years.

As far as the music itself goes, it’s not much better. Some of the underlying beats on the tracks are ok but with Eminem’s obsession for rapping as fast as possible over the top of them, the whole thing lacks life. Sure, people will point to the clever wordplay of the lyrics, but this just papers over the fact that they don’t actually go anywhere. The songs simply have no hooks. With Eminem’s old albums, there were always songs with lyrics you could remember and a chorus you could sing back. Even “River” from Revival was successful in that regard. This entire album has none, and for all the talk of being a masterful lyricist, Eminem has failed to deliver any catchy lines.

Inspirations for this album seem to be all over the place as well. Eminem likes to whine about the state of the rap industry at the moment, with all these new era rappers redefining the genre, but some of his own material is remarkably similar; songs such as “Lucky You,” “Normal” and “Not Alike” are very much what you would describe as modern rap. On the other hand, tracks “Stepping Stone,” “Fall” and “Good Guy” would not be out of place on some of Eminem’s earlier albums, perhaps Recovery or Marshall Mathers LP2. Unfortunately, there are also some entries which are purely unlistenable, most notably “Nice Guy,” which I maintain is the worst song I’ve listened to all year. The album is then topped off by commercial obligation “Venom,” clearly noted as “Music From The Motion Picture” and recognisable through its truly awful chorus, which at least clears up the timing of the release of this “surprise” album.

Overall this album is average at its best and unlistenable at its worst. There’s truly nothing to take inspiration from and the lyrics will be forgotten as soon as a song ends. Frankly, comparing it to Eminem’s earlier work is nothing short of insulting – there’s nothing on the entire album that even warrants a second listen. I very much doubt this album will be making it into many CD collections.

"Kamikaze" reminds me "Hell: The Sequel" and a little bit "The Eminem Show". Obviously, not the best Marshall's album, but this is high-level work. Lyrically still the best rapper (since 1999). Anybody who enjoys listening to rappers who are skilled lyricists who know how to utilize a beat properly should absolutely snatch this up. Eminem raps across the album with impressive diction and and cadence. His flow is precise, his word-play is clever and the beats are a great fit for his verbal prowess. He takes shots at anybody in the way and honestly most of what he says is right on the money. His detractors are likely to be either

    A) Butthurt critics
    B) Mumble Rappers
    C) MGK and his fanbase
    D) Trump supporters
    E) And in rare circumstances, people who are not butthurt and genuinely did not like the album.

Obviously when it comes to art, everybody has their own preference and no matter how good an album is, there will always be some people who dont enjoy it. I do agree with most crirics on one thing, that it is his best in years. The reason I did not like Revival is because it had way too many features and it was too pop-friendly. So if you want a great Eminem album that truly showcases why he is the best on a beat, I highly recommend picking this up. It is a 10 to me but obviously that is just 1 mans opinion. My advice, ignore the critics and decide for yourself.

It's funny that Eminem disses popular rap yet many of the producers and flows Em utilizes are very popular today. Some of the "romantic" tracks feel very akin to the overbaked garbage of Revival but he makes this up with the best track on the album Kamikaze. It feels like a cut from The Slim Shadey. The rest of the album could really benefit from this behavior because of the rest of the album is tainted with Eminem being overly angry and serious. People are also praising this album for Eminem's disses. Sure Em you may have "deeper" lyrics and tone compared to the mumble rappers but when we compare your recent work to Flower Boy there is a stark gap in quality. Also, Joe Budden was incredibly constructive and fair about Revival so it just feels jarring that Em is so angry and dickish. Em also needs to wake up to the fact that he hasn't really influenced popular rap that much. Sure he brags about how he created Hopsin and Logic but that's not really much to brag about. He is so egotistical with his catalog. Listen dude you have two amazing albums in The Slim Shady and Marshall Mathers and the rest of your catalog is decent at best and hot trash at worst. Eminem either needs to take a serious time to reconsider what made Eminem great or just quit Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do love this album, but there are a couple of setbacks. It’s 2018 homophobic slurs can go, however we do know you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, these words have been used by him before h was famous. I can do without the relationship songs. Even though lyrically they are good, it’s no different than any other.

If you’re not an original Mc you just got chin checked! Em took his least favorite genre of hip hop and murdered those artists who use that genre, mocked them, and did it better than they could. I’ve read other reviews “yeah, he fast raps, whatever”. Did you hear what he said? Probably not cause you were busy hating. It doesn’t matter the style or flow, he does the same when busta bust does a guest spot, he murders you on or with your own stuff. He gave respect to some, props to Wayne and imitated his voice to diss others for copying Wayne. Props to Drake then ghost write diss. The rest, you’ll have to listen to. The guest spots were on point.

As sheer performance, Eminem's vocals remain a thing of wonder, which is why it's so dispiriting to hear him circling the drain, relying on old tricks instead of expanding his worldview. He has the musical skills to mature; he's just refusing to let himself act his age.
