A lot of what's contained on this disc reaches for the transcendent and often attains that lofty goal. Even when it doesn't, though, it's still very much worth the listen.
-
The WireMore choppy and scattered than its predecessor but equally compelling. [#241, p.61]
-
Alternative PressMoves from intense free jazz to gamelan to Boredoms-like (Ger)manic trance rock to fusionoid Tortoise-style meanderings-as played by psilocybin-gobbling aliens. [Feb 2004, p.93]
-
This is music that is both lovely to hear and challenging to ascertain at the same time.
-
UncutYoshimi's ebullience is inescapable on Kila Kila Kila, from the gymnastic drumming to her ecstatic, Bjorkesian yelps. [Apr 2004, p.106]
-
A collection of chaotic - yet charming - avant-pop rooted in Japanese culture both martial and precise, like letting blood in a rock garden.
-
For those who had grown used to Boredoms' percussion-orgy period -- from Super Ar through to Vision Creation Newsun, with OOIOO's Feather Float in the middle -- such intermittence will give the album a broken feel, making it feel like its indulgences in improvisation and its ad-hoc demeanor are acts lacking discipline.
-
Because of its unexpected instrumentation and fine songwriting, on mani is the only track on the album that can be praised as anything more than above average.
-
Kila Kila Kila contains numerous pristine sounds and rich textures that show subtle moments of ingenuity and progression.
-
Most of Kila Kila Kila is heavy in all the wrong ways and strangely earthbound.
