  • Summary: New York singer-songwriter Leona Naess recorded this third album in Los Angeles with producer Ethan Johns (Rufus Wainwright).
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 6 out of 9
  2. Negative: 0 out of 9
  1. Her confidence blossomed this time around and vocally, she's never sounded so good.
  2. Naess, abetted by her prettily winsome voice, seems ever perched on a razor's edge of heartbreak and hope -- not an easy trick, but for the most part she pulls it off.
  3. Any fans of Jewel turned off by her recent pop conversion should find some solace, and even some better tunes, in Leona Naess. [#5, p.114]
  4. Sure, it takes some time to sink in, but once it gets a hold of your heart, it won't let go.
  5. Naess is quite comfortable doling out one melodic ditty after another.
  6. 60
These songs are pleasant, stripped-down and also a little limp. [Oct 2003, p.124]
  7. Unlike Leona Naess the musician, Leona Naess the album is nearly forgettable, such is the perfection of its production and cardboard cut-out lyrical and musical themes.

If "What the world needs now is love", as the old songs says, Leona did her part brilliantly: this is a beautiful (and underrated) pop collection about love, and the bad part of it, and the good part of it. Expand
