Critic score distribution:
  1. Positive: 4 out of 7
  2. Negative: 0 out of 7
  1. Malo is one of those rare singers who transcend the mundane with the sheer operatic sweep of his marvelous instrument.
  2. Lucky One isn't the Mavericks, but it's closer to what made that band great than anything Malo has recorded in a while, and shows that he remains a great singer and powerfully imaginative musician regardless of the context.
  3. The real virtue of Lucky One, as on all of his previous efforts, is Malo's voice, a full, rich tenor that conveys dramatic emotional sweep without gratuitously emotive technique.
  4. Overall, the good songs on this album outweigh the average and just plain boring tracks.
  5. Uncut
    60
Though Lucky One is his first collection of orginal material in seven years, it's still rooted firmly in Malo's familiar enthusiasms. [Apr 2009, p.91]
  6. Q Magazine
    60
Despite a few lapses into gross sentimentality, Lucky One sucessfully maintains that allusion [that the past 50 years or so never happened] thanks to some spot-on period arrangements. [Apr 2009, p.107]
  7. Too bad Lucky One is dragged down by his heavy hand.
