    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Manic marks for her a new apogee in terms of versatility and authenticity.

    A journey through Halsey's personal point of views and life experiences. The choice of not including Nightmare makes even more sense now as Manic is already oversaturated by the abundance of different genres waving through the album, approximately separated by the interludes in three main solid units. The singer's primary strength is found in her songwriting skills, in Manic they leave the more philosophical inquisitions of her past discography in favor of an extemporaneous, still sophisticated expression that puts the listener in a chair right in front of her genuine storytelling. With the exception of a couple of fillers, the songs themselves evince a neat identity while oozing pop fragrances absorbing as much as possible from out-of-pop sounds in order to follow and enhance whatever emotion is brought to the table.

    Highlights: You Should Be Sad, Forever... is a Long Time, Finally // Beautiful Strangers

    Partial scores:
    A.S.S. (average songs score) = 8.0/10

    Overall production = 8.3/10
    Overall songwriting = 9.2/10
    Creativity = 8.2/10
    Cohesivity = 7.5/10

    The final score is obtained using the following formula:
    (ASS x 2 + composition x 2 + production x 2 + songwriting x 2 + creativity x 1 + cohesivity x 1)/100 =

    82.3/100

    Manic's final score falls within the category very good albums.

But despite its disappointments and missteps, when the album is good it’s very good - the exceptional punk-pop anthem “3AM” which takes us back to the early 2000s; the brilliant lead single “Without Me”; and the dreamy pop-rap of “SUGA’s Interlude.” Other highlights include the sparkling “More” and Alanis Morissette’s emotive guest appearance. Manic is a very lyrically cohesive album, with a diverse and heterogeneous aesthetic sound, and earns points for Halsey's maturity in relation to her own aesthetics and, albeit full of small slips and some choices that don't fit within the album's organicity like the interludes, most of the songs advance toward a beautiful, self-sufficient sensory dream that captivates us from the first note.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful, Raw, Emotional, and Vulnerable are a few words to describe what Manic means to me. In Ashley, Halsey describes the struggle of being "manic" and still living through the madness of the world. In clementine, Halsey describes how she has a close circle of her family/friends and how it can be limited. In Graveyard, its an atmospheric song about how the warning signs in a relationship can feel like the butterflies. Graveyard also reflects about a toxic and almost near dangerous relationship (Halsey is referring to her past relationship with ex rapper G-Easy who cheated on her various times). In You should be sad, Halsey has described this song on her Twitter as "wanting to write a Carrie Underwood type Before he Cheats but the After he Cheats version" and reflects upon the frustration of a toxic relationship and how she's glad that her past relationship never went into something further such as possibly having children (This song also refers to her past relationship with G-Easy except Halsey changes the narrative as being glad the relationship ended doing to the things that he did as an excuse of being with her in the past). In Forever.... (is a long time), Halsey reflects upon the uncertainty of life as being major then going to minor (meaning she is reflecting upon the bright and dark sides of life, the positive and the negative). It also describes the uncertainty of a relationship and of trusting your partner and the outro will be sampled in the next song. In Dominic's Interlude, Dominic Fike is now telling Halsey's story that describes love and its different stages and how their is a bit of a lack of trust in a partner in a relationship and samples "Talk to your man, tell him he got bad news comin'" which is heard at the outro of Forever... (is a long time). In I HATE EVERYBODY, Halsey reflects upon the negative feedback she has received since the start of her career from her former friends and the media, its an optimistic song that describes to ignore the negative feedback and just hate everybody for saying it and just be your unapologetic self. In 3am, Halsey is calling all the contacts on her phone until she gets an answer and is describing how she wants a digital relationship instead of a physical one as she doesn't want to end up lonely. in Without Me, Halsey is describing how she was taken advantage of in a past relationship. Without Me reflects upon her past relationship with G-Easy who had cheated on Halsey various times. The song earned a #1 place on the Billboard Top 10 last year and maintained that position for about 28-almost 29 weeks! In Finally//beautiful stranger, its a slow "A Star is Born-esque ballad" that describes what love at first sight with beautiful stranger feels like. Halsey confirmed that she wrote this song while she was in a past relationship with ex Yungblud (who she still remains good friends with). In Alanis' Interlude, Halsey teams up with longtime music idol Alanis Morissette and the song describes Halsey's bisexuality and the difference between being in a sexual relationship with a man and being in one with a women. As we know, Halsey is very open on advocating for LGBT+ Rights. In killing boys, Halsey wants "revenge" on a past relationship but not violent revenge, peaceful revenge as she doesn't need this person anymore to feel whole. The song also describes how Women should be strong and independent after a breakup. In SUGA's Interlude, Halsey collaborates with SUGA from the K-Pop group BTS and the song describes how Halsey is near wanting it all but slightly wants a change in her creative aspect and wonders what she would do if she wanted a change from making music. In More, its a raw, vulnerable, and emotional story. Halsey has described the song as "not necessarily a love song but a love song to someone who is not in this world yet but possibly will be someday". In the past, Halsey has struggled with conceiving children due to her diagnosis of Endometriosis which is something she still struggles with to this day. In the past, Halsey has suffered three miscarriages which is very sad and details that struggle with being ready for a child yet finding out that it will not be in this world. In Still Learning, it is an Ed Sheeran esque song (which is pretty ironic since Ed is a credited writer on the song) and the song describes Halsey's journey of self love which she has achieved but still struggles with everyday no matter how easy it looks to be happy, its hard to be ok at times. In 929, Halsey tells the story behind her birthday, September 29. As we know, Halsey was born in 1994 on September 29. In the song, Halsey claims she was born on 9/29 at 9:29am which isn't true as she was born on 9/29 at 9:26am which she found out from her birth certificate. There is another track from the Target version called I'm Not Mad which describes how she isn't mad about how things turned out. Manic is a masterpiece of a story which Halsey tells exceptionally well. Expand

    Halsey's third studio album finds her leaving behind the idea of adapting a persona as the subject for the record (a thing that was the center of her first two records) and instead finds her singing from her own perspective (notice the little "H3, A01" on the cover?).

    Halsey's third studio album finds her leaving behind the idea of adapting a persona as the subject for the record (a thing that was the center of her first two records) and instead finds her singing from her own perspective (notice the little "H3, A01" on the cover?).

    "Manic" is the right name for it: it is filled with so many different sounds and moods, even on the course of one song sometimes . On 'Forever... (is a long time)', Ashley starts singing in a heartfelt way, for it to build to this low dramatic piano interlude, for it to then explode into screams and shouts. The track is the first of the holy trilogy, with 'Dominic's Interlude' and 'I HATE EVERYBODY', all of which almost sound like one long song à la 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Going through the record, one can hear country (the perfectly written 'beautiful stranger / finally', the outraged 'You should be sad'), rock ('3AM'), alternative (the vocally stunning 'More', and '929' which is practically a poem Halsey has decided to just sing), and K-Pop ('Suga's Interlude'). It all sounds so chaotic, yet so cohesive in some way.

    Halsey employs her smartest lyrics ('then I stop cause I don't wanna Uma Thurman your ass' on highlight 'killing boys' might just be the best lyric on the record), and suitable movie references (Clementine from "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" on mesmerizing opener 'Ashley', and from "Jennifer's Body" on 'killing boys').

    The only song that is somehow weak (and still not enough to not make the record), is 'Still Learning', which is an attempt at vulnerability and being confessional, which turns out to be an EDM-based generic miss.

    A leap from its predecessor (the complete mess that was "hopeless fountain kingdom"), "Manic" truly lives up to its title and is truly just THAT, in its sounds, in its aesthetic, in its roll-out.

    It is simply and without a doubt her best album up to date. She is at her most confessional state in this album and it really helps us identify with her, given that we are all people and that she talks about love and loss, feelings and choices to which we can all relate. I hope she continues thriving and evolving, giving us more artistic songs, exactly like the ones of this magnificent album.

    This album shows a very personal side of Halsey being, by far, his best work as a songwriter and singer. It´s cohesive, deep, personal and flirts in a beautiful way with the chaotic from its exciting and very well constructed lyrics. Definitely, the best album of 2020 so far.

Even though it's invisibility in production and lyrics, Lido and Greg Kurstin are the ones that give an authentic and attractive touch in the album that promises to have a big range of listeners, especially with the intervention of Alanis Morissette. Even if the voice of Ashley Frangipane is pretty and seductive, the lyrics and the music doesn't really promote her to give her best.

I expected so much especially considering the strength of her debut, the personality of her follow up and the sigles. God were the singles magnificent. "Without Me " a song so creative, catchy and emotional it took over the airwaves just as much as it did people's hearts. It showed all her best qualities:ear for hooks,strong songwriting and breathy delivery. It felt like a precursor to something grand. Like a return to the roots of "Badlands" streamlined emo pop. If there was still any doubt the stellar "Clementine " would've erased them. We are given a tour of a fractured mind trying to piece itself back together and it showed her power as an artist successful enough to choose what she wants released. With this I thought AOTY was locked in but unfortunately that was a great as it would get. The record took a sharp left turn into the place concept albums go to die. The story they envisioned was prioritized above the music and it shows. The opener "Ashley" tries it's best to gently slide you into the world of "MANIAC " and almost does so. The sputtering syths and rolling piano notes seem to drone rather than lull. There's a pretentious feel to it as of it is doing more than it should. But all considered it wasn't a bad song. The first half is very strong as it's packed with the singles which as an isolated group of songs would've been a must hear Ep but as she would have it it would continue. The "experimental "(i say it sarcastically as it's idea of experimentation is just bad production and self depreciating lyrics and ill advised features. )second half is no longer insular as it shifts the lense to relationships and how they affect the depressed (manic)narrator. There is a very pleasant three song punch of " Dominick interlude" ,"3am"&"i hate everybody" that is so cohesive it threatens to break the generic interruptions of track 4&5 but eventually you realize that they aren't that good and you only thought they were because the album required low expectations to enjoy. So much so it must be a concept album on disappointment. The cliches come in many saccharine and sometimes annoying forms such as the unnecessary Kate Winslet sample in "killing boys" or the stream grab of the "suga interlude ". It has so much unchecked ambition that it ends up sounding mediocre. As if it's all bells and whistles but no practicality. I wish this could've been better. Halsey has officially reached her creative peak. In Manic, she fluidly wanders around many genres and still makes it cohesive. Couldn’t left her beautiful lyrics out of this, heartbreaking and full of emotions, one of the best albums of 2020, for sure.

The only songs that work on their own are "Without Me", "3am" and "You should be sad". But that’s not a bad thing at all because a cohesive, creative, interesting body of work is so rare these days because all the artists fill their albums with possible radio hits with the same trap beat. The lyrics on this album are also beautiful and deeply personal. Halsey sings about loneliness, bisexuality, (her) mental health, toxic relationships and craving love. Even the interludes are good and interesting and flow really well. It’s also a very experimental album as it experiments with country and rock music. Definitely Halsey‘s best album and one of the best of 2020 so far.

    The real problem is that the best ideas are outvoted by frustrating ones, leaving us with little touches like the short, yelping-like sound in the second verse of More or the distorted vocals that end killing boys. There are some good moments here, but even the best of them can’t help Halsey get out of her own way.

    Manic is a rich and often confounding listen, an expansive album filled to the brim with the imagined worlds Halsey’s built for herself in the real one. It’s also sincerely, indefatigably Halsey: She puts her loves and ambitions on wholly earnest display, even if it doesn’t always make for the most consistent listen.
