    This is an album I really wasn't expecting from these guys. It took me a few listens to finally dig it, but I'm really enjoying it. If you're familiar with their previous efforts, you'd know that they've always been heavy and in your face. This one is more nuanced and as previously said the guitar from Toshi has as much a part as the bass from Jared or the drums from Coady. If you're familiar with their previous efforts, you'd know that they've always been heavy and in your face. This one is more nuanced and as previously said the guitar from Toshi has as much a part as the bass from Jared or the drums from Coady. On previous efforts Jared's singing was loud throughout and on this one he's toned that down and on a couple tracks he's singing in a tone I hadn't yet heard.

    This album isn't as immediately satisfying and as in your face as the others but with time you'll really like it. It's a new direction for a great band and great bands have to shake it up from time to time to keep things interesting.    … Expand

    There’s something Spinal Tap-ish about the reach for grandeur here--not that it’s bad exactly, more that it seems not fully justified by the material.

    Willis still viciously circumnavigates his drumkit with authority and adventure. Warren still manhandles a viscous bass tone that he funnels into heavy themes. Kasai adds texture and dimension, augmenting what's there instead of adulterating it.

    Using Shallow and Waterworks as benchmarks, this doesn't even come close; it's glaringly obvious that the addition of a third member has wreaked havoc on the formula.
