While Mudboy is a strong and holistic statement from an upstart rapper, with the early-album run from “Live Sheck Wes” through “Chippi Chippi” being particularly stunning, these songs feel like underscores for the colossal “Mo Bamba.”

Sheck masterfully transcends one-hit-wonder status throughout his debut.

It is a good first showing, especially given the conception of many vis-à-vis the musical talents of one hit wonders. But it does have the feel of a first album, in that Sheck seems to still be looking for his style and sound.

On songs like “Kyrie” and “Gmail,” he briefly lives up to that raucous potential. Unfortunately, the missteps--the thin singing voice used on “WESPN” and awkward yogurt references of “Danimals”—hamper much of the promise.

There isn’t enough content in Mudboy to make it much other than a vibe. There are traces of A$AP Ferg, Waka Flocka Flame, and OG Maco locked beneath its consistently muddy sound. But there isn’t enough nuance or ‘moments’ to make it worth repeated listens (like Sheck’s mentor, Travis Scott).

It's unique and stands out which was the intention here. The only problem with this album is the lack of concentration when Sheck strays from the hard hitters. WESPN sounds kinda like a parody of sorts. Burn Slow is nothing special. The same with every song that follows. There are good moments here but they're too sparse towards the end. It's a good debut album from someone that many expected to be a one-hit wonder but it's not a career defining project. His sophomore album will be highly anticipated and I expect a Playboi Carti "Die Lit" jump from his freshman effort. Good work overall though. Expand

MUDBOY is the first album by Sheck Wes, a signee of Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records. This album ends up being an alright record, what IMUDBOY is the first album by Sheck Wes, a signee of Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records. This album ends up being an alright record, what I mostly expected coming into it. I did get some new depth into Sheck’s music while listening to this album. There were about 5 good tracks, while the rest were at an average score. My favorite tracks were “Mindfu3ker,” “Mo Bamba,” “Burn Slow Interlude,” “F3ck Everybody,” and “Vetements Socks.” For a first album, it’s not too bad and shows Sheck’s potential and a future transition into a promising direction.
