  • Summary: The debut album for the Florida-based rock band known as the band Tom Petty was in before the Heartbreakers.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 8 out of 10
  2. Negative: 0 out of 10
  1. Mostly, Mudcrutch works for everyone: fans, the members who were left behind fame-wise, and Petty himself, who gets to look like a good guy for giving them a taste of what they missed.
  2. Mudcrutch might be about wrapping up unfinished business, but there's plenty of new life in this old, thankfully resuscitated band.
  3. Mudcrutch is a grand old slice of classic country rock that not only serves as Petty’s finest work in almost a decade but is a mighty fine incentive for any long-defunct group with a hankering to dust off the drama and head back into the studio to quit their harboring and just go for it.
  4. No, the sound isn’t all that different from what Petty does with the Heartbreakers, but the Mudcrutch album has the looser feel you get from old buddies jamming for kicks.

The Mudcrutch reunion is a refreshing tweak to the comfy old Petty band chemistry. [July 2008, p.108]
  6. It's rock the old-school way--born of real-time collaboration and realized with heaps of joy and sweat.
  7. 'Scare Easy,' the single, and 'Bootleg Flyer,' reminiscent of Petty's classic 'American Girl,' are the standouts on this collection of rough and ragged, feel-good country-rock. [July 2008, p.107]

Having been a big fan of Petty's rock'n'roll, and a alt-county/americana freak, the merging of the two on Mudcrutch blows me away!

Pretty darn good, mostly. Tom continues to make classics, and to do it with the original band when he didn't need tp...that says alot about him. Definately more of a country flavor, but a great cd!! Keep it up Tom Expand

Easily my favorite album of the year thus far. The band sounds as if it had as much fun recording the album as discerning listeners will have hearing it. And we're talking big fun here, especially for those of us "chronologically-challenged" enough to remember 1970s west coast folk-rock and why we dug it. Expand

Very enjoyable listening--not Tom Petty's best, but very nice nonetheless.
