Nabuma Rubberband is a solid album, but ideally you want a record that does more than remind you of the band’s existence.

While Nabuma Rubberband may not be the commercial breakthrough that some may have expected, it’s still a largely enjoyable record and, together with fellow Swede Lyyke Li‘s new album, proves once again that nobody does swooningly melancholic pop quite like the Scandanavians.

This is another fine entry into their parallel universe. It's not the break-out record that they might have gone for, though.

Nabuma Rubberband is Little Dragon’s selfish record, and splendidly so. Some of the sweet moments in its strongest tracks, however, are lost in others, as is the nature of an album with standout tracks.

Most of the time, Nabuma Rubberband sounds well put-together but empty, all style and no content, the kind of album that won’t offend you while you’re listening to it but which you’d be hard-pressed to remember any of once closer “Let Go” comes to an end.

It is mostly sharp, harsh sounds that have been smoothed over during production with backing ambience. The most colourful and pretty track of the album is the title track, Bécs. It is similarly harsh, though, has a nicer chord progression and simplicity that adds more character to it . I probably wouldn’t bother telling anyone about this album unless someone was looking for something unusual that isn’t typical to their taste. Kinda dystopian sounding, like the personal aftermath of a drug addiction. Full Review »
