It's almost as if Cobra Starship created Night Shades in fear of judgement. Too determined to meet mainstream's standards, Cobra Starship lost touch with their creative side in their worst album to date. Too determined to meet mainstream's standards, Cobra Starship lost touch with their creative side in their worst album to date. They may be even hard to consider a band anymore due to the lack of instruments in Night Shades. The sad part is that there is a little potential in some of the almost "Vintage" pop sounds we hear in tracks like "Fool Like Me," where it seems like they were trying to make this album stand out from the others. Unfortunately, Cobra Starship fell through on that by seeking hype out of recruiting the "flavor of the week" pop stars such as Mac Miller, and then forgetting to actually write a song. Expand

This album lack vision, inspiration and bravado. Where are the riffs and creativity from some of the previous albums. I felt like screaming "this has been done before!" ....Time and Time again....really what it boils down to is a complete waste of my time.

As a whole, the album is incoherent yet repetitive. The overuse of some electronic sounds is annoying at times. Nevertheless, Night Shades has some pretty decent tracks, which are all great and suitable for club and party.

The mild vulgarity and cute arrogance put to such an innocent melody [in "Fool Like Me"] is the brand of sass for which Cobra Starship are best known. Unfortunately, these traits are desperately lacking from the rest of Night Shades.

Saporta can't tune out his favorite decade, adopting a silky croon on "Anything for Love," a synth-pop winner that might've been a real hit in 1986.

Packing so many WTFs into one ten-song record is hardly fair, a bit reckless, and ultimately (amazingly) successful.
