Oct 16, 201291There's an urgency in his voice that gives every driving chorus added heat, whether he's singing about a woman (''I Don't Do Lonely Well,'' ''Staring at the Sun''), his country-boy work ethic (''The Only Way I Know,'' with Luke Bryan and Eric Church), or a water tower (literally, ''Water Tower''). And man, does he know how to turn a simple date-night drive into something epic.

Oct 16, 201290With these 15 tracks, it's clear he can do it all pretty damn good.

Oct 24, 201260With the exception of the occasional detour into heartbreak ("I Don't Do Lonely Well") or empathy ("Black Tears"), it can feel like he's doing the same stylized smalltown-conjuring over and over, to the point of hollowness.

Oct 16, 201260Even at his most powerful, singing hard in his nasal voice--it's got impact but not much traction.
-
Oct 16, 201250The traditional tones and textures of country music are largely lost in the array of guitar solos that sound like Bon Jovi audition tapes.

Oct 16, 201250Certainly, Night Train is huge, but its size feels derived by divine proclamation: it is big simply because it was intended to be big but at its core it feels weary, a little hollow, and not at all fun.
