There's no doubt that Nothing Fits is a high-pressure, unflagging, and energetic piece of work. But it's also fun, frequently lowbrow, and--to the heathenish--a bit backward.

The self-titled release was dominated more by decaying, almost bleak instrumental meanderings than the half-cocked pop-fuzz that made the group's many singles such hot items. 2010's Nothing Fits, released on In the Red, is a near total about-face, consisting of 11 swift, fierce blasts.

Nothing Fits is the band's first release to be recorded in an actual studio, and the result is a shorter, more focused record, but hardly a cleaner one.

The nuanced defeatism on Nothing Fits separates these brash, loud punk anti-anthems from the standard hardcore fare. The most ephemeral evidence of this is also the most effective: instead of battering you into submission with unadulterated force, songs are separated with just enough silence to make you uncomfortable, impatient. The subtle natures of hell are often the worst.

Tyevk are still at the best when they keep things short, snarky, and catchy, as on "Underwater 1's" sunken mental asylum rave-up or the road rage rant "Pricks in a Car." Nevertheless, Nothing Fits proves that they can change things up and still deliver music with visceral impact.

It's as if Tyvek decided to reinvent themselves as a mutated punk group, and to no one's surprise, the aesthetic shift works.

The Detroit budget-punks follow last year's eponymous art-scuzz by zinging through 12 anthemic amp-melters in 26 minutes. [Feb 2011, p.989]

The fall and Dead Kennedys are the key influences here. [Dec 2010, p.109]

So, yeah, Tyvek (on this album anyway) are pretty trad-punk. Which is not all that bad. When one wants to listen to something that sounds like old punk rock but isn't actually old punk rock, one could do a lot worse than listen to these guys.

Playing like 12 unmastered seven-inches varying wildly in style and volume levels, Nothing Fits vacillates between feral Wire putter, psych-addled Wipers soar, and bleary No Age blur.

For those with an indie record collection longer than any Christmas list, it will fit right in. It would just be nice if Tyvek would stand out more instead of quietly doing its job.

Listen to it the way its supposed to be listened to: on your mom's old stereo system, in your basement, turned up so loud that you can't hear your neighbors screaming at you, or the police bustin up your door. After listening to the album, it feels needless to say, it is a debut that leads to something else. The dirtiness, the scratchiness, the raw sizzling **** It takes lo-fi ideas and nurtures them with heroin. Put on some sort of speed that's fast but heavy. Feels really good turned up loud. This album is gritty, messy. But it feels excellent. Oh ya, some good songs are Pricks In A Car, 4312, and Underwater To. Full Review »
