One Second of Love's main issue is not one of sonic fidelity, but consistency. If the murk of earlier recordings hid some of Nite Jewel's intentions, they also succeeded in hiding slightly forced stylistic leanings.

Instead of ebullience, the disc finds footing in the hard lessons of romantic realism.

One Second of Love is arresting from the outset, Gonzalez's airily velveteen vocals cascading in with a similar invitingly icy inflection to St Vincent on Surgeon while luscious, Eyes Without a Face-esque keyboard washes burble by on their way to a skippily abrupt, if recoverable, meltdown.

For a record of such minimalist production as this, the latest from LA's Ramona Gonzalez, a.k.a. Nite Jewel, it's surprising how much genre ground can be covered.

One Second Of Love is a remarkably bold move for the young singer, and when it clicks, the results are irresistible.

Does it all work? No, but the results are uniformly intriguing.

Early music is fascinating to people in a way that goes deeper than anything else, and for musicians and artists, all those early things spill out in the things we make. Gonzalez does that here in a fun and remarkable way.

Her latest clears the air with crisper production and subtle, synthy R&B swagger. [23 Mar 2012, p.74]

It's very difficult not to like these songs--for their clarity and craftmanship, but also the strength of their ideas.

What's great about the record is the transformative effect of art school meeting R&B.

Sometimes Nite Jewel's music feels so controlled, you can't help but wonder what would happen if she'd lose her head for not just one second, but one minute or more.

Nite Jewel has blossomed into a something not too far removed from a genuine pop star. Yet you feel One Second Of Love is a promising step forward rather than the finished article.

Flash-forward to two years later and we get One Second of Love, which finds Gonzalez maturing into a graceful songstress without entirely abandoning what inspired her in the first place.

In the end, One Second of Love is enjoyable but slight: its stronger moments render the weaker ones particularly forgettable.

Above all, One Second Of Love is a triumph of atmospherics and arrangements.

Gonzalez is more fun when she's trying to be challenging than when she's trying to be fun.

One Second of Love is artfully crafted.

She's found a strong, vibrato-less voice that's confident but imperfect in funny ways.

Gonzalez' voice is beautiful, but it doesn't have the emphatic uniqueness to carry the album on its own, while the songwriting, though producing gems like the EBTG-esque, understated "Mind & Eyes" is just uneven enough to fade occasionally into the background.

A set of pristine ballads that veer somewhere between the atmospheric folk of Suzanne Vega and Sade's austere pop-soul. [Apr 2012, p.83]

Nita's Jewel "One Second of Love" is an album as uneven as its title track. There is potential, but still something is not right. Vocals doNita's Jewel "One Second of Love" is an album as uneven as its title track. There is potential, but still something is not right. Vocals do not always fit into tight electronic backing which prevails, pushing the instrumental sections on the back burner. Fortunately, the album has its good points, which are more subdued compositions such as "Sister", or minimalist "Unearthly Delights". Full Review »
