    There’s no explicit theme behind Piano Song. It’s simply strong, well-considered jazz, with Shipp’s piano leading a thorough dialogue with bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Newman Taylor Baker.

    Some tracks move in more arcane ways, such as the hesitantly titled pieces “Silence of”, “Void of”, and the piano solo “The Nature of”. As playful and enjoyable as they may be, good luck finding out what makes them tick.

    Full disclosure, I'm not a big jazz guy so obviously my point of view has to be taken with a grain of salt. While some of the songs on this album worked for me, there were points where it went off on tangents, got hyper focused on certain notes and lost me. Full Review »
