None of the Indications' contemporaries have put together a set as distinctly purpose-built and delightful as this one.

As a unit, the ten tracks on Private Space put funk in a kimono and send it out on the dancefloor with nothing to hide. Don’t delay: dial up the new one from the Indications, then get up and start moving with it.

A lofty ambition [songs to heal some souls], perhaps, but one this resonant and deeply pleasurable album achieves with grace and groove. [Aug 2021, p.78]

It’s immersive and ambiguous, these tales belong to you as much as they do the person next to you on the train.

Private Space is a honeyed slice of the retro-soul with pop leanings from Durand Jones & The Indications as they continue to mine the 60’s and 70’s for inspiration.

There are no musical revelations but recreating the groove of the terrific In Yo’ Face! The History of Funk series of sadly out of print compilations from Rhino is harder than it sounds.

They are one tight band with two amazing vocalists, and have an uncanny ability to take in the classic sounds of soul and put them in a modern context. This album is no exception, although it is slightly less perfect than their last album American Love Call. With this album, they are infuenced by mid 70's funk and disco, although Witchoo adds some hip-hop grooves. It is one of the best songs they've ever recorded, as is Love Will Work It Out. Other than that, the tunes on here are a bit more mellow, and the harmonies don't seem as prevalent. Aaron Frazer's falsetto is more front and center as well - and I love his voice - but Durand seems to be a little less utilized this time. Small complaints - overall, this is a great album and I've had it on repeat for days. Expand
