The Toronto, ON four-piece deliver their structurally intricate tunes with unhinged ferocity, the raw arrangements never deviating from the outfit's basic live setup of bass, pummelling drums and twin distorted guitars.

PUP is 10 songs of irreverent party jams for buds and their gals and their bros.

PUP’s ability to enliven a tired genre with an abundance of ideas and exuberance is a small but exceptional feat.

There are plenty of shout-a-long moments along the way though (the frantic whoa’s and blah-blah’s on ‘Lionheart’ arrive at exactly the right time), and all-in-all it’s an extremely commendable effort that solidifies PUP as one of this year’s bands to get sweaty to at a festival.

What’s makes PUP an engrossing listen, though, is also what takes it beyond a typical hardcore record: there’s sunlight that refuses to be shut out from the overcast skies.

Pup have come out spitting, sounding like Dookie-era Green Day dipped in tar and broken glass. [12 Apr 2014, p.53]
  7. 75
PUP is an incredibly self-assured and refreshing debut for a band unwilling to shake the pressures of becoming an adult.
