It’s Redcar’s most challenging album yet, in which he addresses an entity that could be either himself, or a lover; the production still leans heavily into the delicate, baroque synth-pop and irresistible melodies he has become so lauded for, but the emphasis remains on Redcar’s vocal delivery and texturally succulent lyrics.

The album doesn’t have near the instant pop appeal of past Queens albums, since much of the music sounds contemplative (it is an opera after all even if it’s still mainstream-adjacent music), but when Chris gives himself over to a beat, he still commands pop greatness.

By not forcing Redcar's music into a pop template when it doesn't fit, the album reaffirms him as a resolutely independent artist and makes another fine addition to a nearly flawless discography.

A frustrating listen from a brilliantly talented artist. For all of its angels and prophecies and mid-century decadence, what we are left with is a very quiet collection of songs with all the weight of ephemera.

Though these are often beautiful and uneasy songs, too many of them feel rudderless.

Notably absent from Redcar les adorables étoiles is the sense of exquisite, crystalline vision present in Letissier’s prior work. Perhaps this lack is only a function of the production style, featuring reverb-soaked vocals, rambling melodies, and spacey synthesizers.

Letissier is a fascinating and riveting performer, but this passion project feels unfocused and undercooked. [Mar 2023, p.26]

Serving as the Prologue to an extended project, Redcar is our introduction to a new era of Christine and the Queens. Experimental yet polished, constrained yet boundless. The accompanying performance at The Royal Festival Hall really helped to illustrate Redcar's vision for this project and the fluidity of his work as both music and theatre. I think that Christine and the Queens is truly one of the most exciting and underrated artists of our time. Expand

In many ways it reminds me of some of my favourite Cocteau Twins moments. The production allowing the vocals to bleed into the music to create rich textures. There are still enough melodies and pop beats here to make this a pop record but it won't tire. Expand
