As a whole, the album rejects traditional song structures, though the final three tracks (“Shy”, “Fade Away” and “Make Believe”) are arguably the most melodic on the record. Such a duality implies the sheer range of Diamond’s artistry, so much so that it would be criminal to label her a “new kind of popstar”. Simply put, she is a new kind of star, an artistic voice that stands out in the tumult of the modern musical world.

Where Polachek is erudite and poetic, Diamond is prosaic; where Polachek’s vocals are astonishingly skilful, swooping into high registers, Diamond’s are unremarkably ordinary. Except they are remarkable, in their way.

For the most part, though, Diamond’s debut album sparkles. Harnessing heartbreak and combining it with wickedly odd production, ‘Reflections’ is a shimmering collection of unconventional pop songs. After all that speculation, Hannah Diamond is human after all.

It’s an album that draws you into Diamond’s world, full of real, 3D emotions.

Songs on ‘Reflection’ transcend the boundaries of radio-ready pop music, are a reflection (no pun intended) of the larger shift of pop music to something entirely digital in every sense, a shift that seems to mirror that of the music industry in the past decade.

There must have been considerable pressure on Diamond to deliver with this album, and she largely does with Reflections — it really does sound like pop music from 15 years in the future. Hopefully a more substantial collection of new material isn't too far into it.

If you hate PC Music, you will continue to; if you love them, Reflections will not change that. But producer A. G. Cook’s done a lot since 2013, so inevitably, these tracks register less as individual Cook songs than as types of Cook song.

At first her songs sound like they shouldn't be taken seriously: they're robotic, impersonal, overly energetic, and bubbly. But they're also insanely catchy and fun, and if you're willing to set aside any preconceived notions, you'll realize that this is incredibly smart music disguised as bad music. I love it ironically, but also unironically.

Anyway, I'm so glad Hannah Diamond has finally released an actual album after a stream of awesome singles. The production on this album is fantastic, and I especially like the unconventional song structures. Reflections pretty much proves that she's a serious artist, and I can't wait to hear more from her in the future. I only wish this album were longer, but for now this is a solid debut.
