The studio set’s sound balance is warm and spacious, the live takes less so (Bennink’s irrepressible energy sometimes overdominates). These tracks catch the saxophone colossus in gale-force form with partners right on his case, and the accompanying essays and images expand on that fascinating story.

Amiable adaptability is a constant across the three concerts. Fidelity is conversely variable, but improved bootleg editions of the material and always listenable.

Rollins in Holland is handsomely packaged with rare photos and some lengthy historical essays. The importance of this release cannot be overstated; Rollins' playing here is at a peak of unfettered creativity, communicative openness, and technical acumen.
