On Sail Out, Jhené Aiko remains on her cloud, delivering 30 minutes of alt-R&B respite from reality, displaying soothing vocals, double-entendre-laden wordplay and a knack for choosing collaborators.

Breathy R&B vocalist Jhené Aiko fleshes out her character on Sail Out, a relaxed debut EP that suggests that this girl is on permanent vacation.

If her writing is still a work in progress, it's progress that's worth watching.

Though it is easy to grasp the broad appeal of Aiko’s music, it’s harder to decipher whether the songs are more appealing than the mere atmosphere they create.
  5. 60
Aiko’s presence produces an easy, lived-in experience. Sail Out never quite excels, though, because those big moments are all too few.

At its best, the California singer offers sweet but forgettable elevator music.

The risk of keeping things breezy is that tracks can often lack weight.

This is just a cool EP to vibe with. Stay Ready (What A Life) featuring Kendrick Lamar is a work of art. Overall this is a good debut for her, can't wait for a full length album. Needless to say it has the best album cover of 2013. Expand
