I discovered this record before discovering the material it is giving tribute to. "The Ballad of Big Nothing" as covered by Julien Baker is incredible. "Pictures of Me" covered by Amanda Palmer is so, so good. Then you have Tanya Donelly & J Mascis which are absolutely terrific, as is every other cover on this record. I then began to research the original material. Elliot Smith wasI discovered this record before discovering the material it is giving tribute to. Walking the fine line between so many gradations of emotion can be tricky, and there are more missed opportunities on Say Yes! than revealing interpretations.
