We should be thankful at least for this one precocious masterpiece, where even the big closing motivational ballad “Energy” comes humble and soothing. The 14 flawless blasts of pure hunger that precede it are equally spare, allowing room for all sorts of monumental chords and vocal inflections to weave their way into Salieu’s tales of frontline Coventry. Stunning debut mixtape ‘Send Them To Coventry’. The 15-track project is a musical kaleidoscope, fusing elements of afro-swing, dancehall, grime, and rap. Sonically, it speaks to the fluidity of Black sounds.

Send Them To Coventry is an album bursting with life. Pa Salieu sounds confident and convincing whatever style he turns his hand to. Whether or not it’s the best album of 2020, it’s surely one of the most interesting, and should be a strong contender for awards in the coming months.

Seriously brilliant stuff. ‘Send Them To Coventry’ promises that Salieu is unbelievably gifted with a ceiling nowhere in sight. He carries the entire mixtape with his singular voice oscillating between conventional rap flows, dancehall toasts and ice-cold venomous lyrics.

Imbued throughout with a fusion of Pa’s Gambian heritage, and life growing up in Coventry (“COV, #cityofviolence” introduces ‘Informa’), it’s a varied, confident and cinematic trip through where the performer finds himself.

Frontline and My Family are among the best singles of the year, and there are three more just as good here.

Send Them to Coventry sounds like it would have been successful at any time, regardless of extraneous circumstances: it’s too fresh and inventive to ignore.

Got a really hard time getting over Pa Salieu's tough english accent. After a few listens and reading his lyrics it all appears clearer. TheGot a really hard time getting over Pa Salieu's tough english accent. After a few listens and reading his lyrics it all appears clearer. The first striking thing about this mixtape is the ease with which the artist moves from one musical style to another: we obviously have rap, hip-hop, some drill sounds but also some tracks with an african touch (sorry by the way to call it so generally 'african touch', I am far from being a professional). Our attention is easily attracted by the production of this project and by the fact that Pa Salieu decided to make it sound tribal ('My Family'), joyful ('Energy'), violent ('Frontline') or even reminding us of the atmosphere of a silent war ('B***K').

As Pa said about himself, he is not the kind of a punchline artist. So don't expect lyrical intensity but rather deep and close storytelling with great issues tackled. There are many guests on 'Send Them to Coventry' and I think it is a good point since the artist did not make an amazing work on his voice which remains unchanged from beginning to the end. The apparition of Mahalia at the end is a breath of fresh air. Fortunately he managed to make his lyrics delivery and flow vary even if structures of songs are not crazy-original.
