On his first solo album under his own name, the songwriting is just as sharp and hooky and the emotions sometimes just as plaintive, sad and angsty as on past projects. But this time Bogart hits upon the most fully realized pop idol version of himself by embracing the demented, neon-coloured camp aesthetic he's always loved.

His new self-titled record slips out of the leather jacket in favor of body-oiled synth-pop that balances between swagger-happy and tooth-rottingly sweet.

It's not quite Hunx and it's definitely not punk, but Seth Bogart is a blast.

The tension between artifice and reality is what gives Seth Bogart most of its conceptual heft, but it obviously helps that the album is very fun to listen to.

It's exciting to see artists try and change and evolve their sound, so while it doesn't always work here, Seth Bogart definitely shows enough promise to make one wonder what future non-Hunx recordings from Bogart will sound like.

The beats on this album are kinda nice, but that is essentially the only strong point Seth Bogart has going for it...him. The vocals on thisThe beats on this album are kinda nice, but that is essentially the only strong point Seth Bogart has going for it...him. The vocals on this record are extraordinarily annoying in a physically uncomfortable sort of way. Avoid at all costs. Expand
