Smalhans is all the luscious layering, thoughtful breakdowns, sneaky beats and catchy positivity fans would expect with some cockier, more straightforward dance moves included, as well.

    It's a lush and elevating experience. [Dec 2012, p.109]

There are no new tricks at hand here, no experimental forays into the goonier psych-prog ends of the space disco genre. And you know what? Thank f*** for that.

Smalhans is a veritable feast of grin-inducing dancefloor treats.

Smalhans is, like its predecessors, ultimately its own complete, unified statement; one that is, in its deceptively humble way, as ambitious and assured as anything he's done.

Smalhans is a reliably generous gesture from an artist that takes pleasure in indulging himself and his audience.

At first glance, Smalhans feels exceedingly necessary as reconciliation for Six Cups of Rebel, but it's quite a reliable document on its own.

Smalhans is something of a palate cleanser, but a satisfying one nonetheless. [Nov 2012, p.62]

It has an effortless momentum and addictive melodic pull that renders serious criticism redundant. [Dec 2012, p.73]

If there's a weakness here, it's in the lack of variety to Smalhans' structures and sounds, the emphasis on arpeggios and keyboard lines that arc ever higher.

Smalhans won't be the most memorable record of the year, but that's partly because its great strength is its subtlety, which makes it constantly refreshing.

Lindstrom is becoming increasingly diverse; but his style is immediately recognizable--probably as good a proof of artistic development as there is. Cheap and dirty, he still shines.

When times are lean, Smalhans contains just the sort of shamelessly calorific dance music that we should be thankful for.

Smallhans is an electronic purist's dream and reestablishes Lindstrøm as an innovative producer who is capable of powerful work.

The title is Norwegian for "poverty," but its rewards are as rich as they've ever been.

Smalhans, [is] a return to his old self that alternatively plays things a little too safe by offering six tracks of Lindstrøm-by-numbers.

Smalhans is simply another disappointing album from a producer who once seemed poised to become one of the more significant of his generation.

Smalhans is an enjoyable listen, though it's creatively limited when compared to Lindstrøm's previous work, not providing much more to the listener than a feel-good album.
  19. Each of these six songs is named after a traditional Norwegian dish, and together they cook up a satisfying if unadventurous snack.

If you can get by the instruments of choice and shed your pop-cultural and historical references long enough to forgive the undeniably cheesy synth lines you may just find yourself appreciating this record for what I believe it was intended to be-upbeat, easy-listening dance music.
