Sally Shapiro has beguiled fans at the intersection of electronic dance music and twee indie-pop with its near-perfect time capsules of ’80s synth-pop. The format hasn’t strayed much on this third full-length album, although the landscape has.
  2. Some might call it Kylie for hipsters, but it's quite lovely for that.

As it is, with the improvements, revamps, and overall more interesting arrangements, Somewhere Else manages to be the equal of Disco Romance, and the only reason it isn't better is that it lacks the surprise factor that made Sally Shapiro's debut so breathtaking.

While the songwriting is more varied here than on previous LPs (Shapiro sometimes causes rather than experiences heartbreak), the pop hooks don’t always ascend to the maximal sound they aim for.

  1. I would have preferred more technicality in the musicianship but it's pop, so that's okay. Overall I just love her vocal timbre and ability, and how beautifully floats over the electronica beats. It's something you can melt to AND dance to. Really great. Expand
