  1. Whether or not it's as good as The Luca Brasi Story is irrelevant, though at this point the two are about even. The highs on Luca Brasi are higher and the lows are lower, but Stranger Than Fiction is a much more consistent listen.

In small doses this perpetual explosion is often magnificent. [Sep 2013, p.66]

The Luca Brasi Story was more ambitious, but Stranger Than Fiction does moves Gates closer to a larger audience.

Minor issues like that [decision to release Stranger Than Fiction as a hybrid album/mixtape led to some questionable choices] make Stranger Than Fiction very good rather than great, but Gates hasn’t sacrificed any of the characteristics that garnered all this recent attention.

The record's uncompromising hard luck street narratives are dispensed with a preternaturally sharp eye for detail that dabs Gates’ economic writing with a shock of much-needed color.

Looking back at Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak, there is much strength to be gained in weakness--Gates current momentum is fueled with that power.

An artist on the verge of a spectacular breakthrough. [Oct 2013, p.107]

He treats this debut album like a retail mixtape, and the result is a project that picks off from where The Luca Brasi Story left off. Unfortunately, these high points aren’t enough for him here to progress further.

I think this is Kevin Gate's best album so far, saying this in March, 2016, so that statement accounts for even the albums he's had sinceI think this is Kevin Gate's best album so far, saying this in March, 2016, so that statement accounts for even the albums he's had since then. Songs such as Money Magnet, White Tan, 4:30am, Smiling Faces, Tiger, and Thinking With My D*ck are all some of his best. Definitely worth a listen. Gates is at his best on these tracks, solidifying his reputation as one of the top rappers in business right now. Full Review »
