  1. Sometimes these lyrics are a bit stifling and confusing to place in context, but once more, these songs become something more due to Turner's impeccable vocal melodies.

Five swoony songs, sung beautifully, no duffers, and plenty of knotty lyrics to try and unravel. Another job well done.

The song quality is set on an upward trajectory from start to end, with the last two tracks also distinguished by their fleshed out arrangements.

Matched to this sophisticated, admirably restrained music, Turner's Submarine songs have a backwards-looking quality, a guy who's been through it calmly reexamining the scars and renavigating the pitfalls.

It's a fine piece of work in its own right.

There's little that goes out of its way for your attention but the elegance and restraint is exactly what gives most of the songs, like "It's Hard To Get Around The Wind" with the preceding "Even if you know which way it's gonna blow" line, their colour.

This six-track soundtrack EP of songs by Alex Turner finds the Arctic Monkey in appropriately reflective, wistful mood, as befits the hero's fanciful view of himself as a bit of a thinker.

Alex Turner is just one of the greatest composers/musicians nowadays; either with the Arctic Monkeys, The Last Shadow Puppets or just as Alex Turner. He's been even considered as a poetician. Expand

Alex Turner composes these songs with as much love and attention as anything else he writes. The lyrics are intriguing and vivid... It meshes perfectly with the coming-of-age movie that these songs were written for. Hell, even my grandmother loved this album! Real music right here. If you want to feel calmed and want to listen to some poetry, then you should definitely give this a listen. 9/10 Expand

Alex Turner doesn't use Submarine as an opportunity to indulge himself or experiment but instead sticks to what he does best - write nice and catchy pop songs that get into your head. It inevitably has the mark of Arctic Monkeys all over it but more mellow, not necessarily stripped down. If you compare the version of Piledriver Waltz on here compared to that on "Suck and See" you will see what I mean. It's a very decent set of songs and Arctic Monkey fans will enjoy it but considering its brevity and the fact that its strongest track appears on a Monkeys record, Submarine can hardly be called essential. Alex Turner is just a good musician, simple as that. He was good with the Shadow Puppets and he's good with this. Nice catchy songs that make ya bob your head. Good production, nice acoustic, nice warm up for those who still have not listened to the new Monkeys album. Expand
