The Ash & Clay, which is the new record from The Milk Carton Kids, is a fine representation of a dish that’s been plated to near perfection with but a small amount of key elements to make it a delight.

The album succeeds more often than it flounders, and even then, the singin' and pickin' is so good that it's hard not to submit, but one wishes that the pair had decided to infuse the collection with a bit more of their signature wit, as much of The Ash & Clay feels a bit like a serious Flight of the Conchords.

These guys remind me of Simon & Garfunkel. They remind us that you can make beautiful, powerful music with the simplicity of just two voicesThese guys remind me of Simon & Garfunkel. They remind us that you can make beautiful, powerful music with the simplicity of just two voices and two guitars. How do they do it? They use clever, provocative lyrics, lovely vocal harmonies, and very nice guitar melodies. It's not a very versatile album, but if you like this kind of music, it really delivers. It keeps your interest because there are so many moments throughout the album that can speak to you, and make you feel something. It's very competently done, in order to create something as beautiful as this album is. my favorite is probably either the title track or "Years Gone By", but really, there isn't a song on its own, that you would hear outside of the album, like maybe on the radio or something, that you wouldn't be compelled to find out who the artist was, and where you can listen to the song again.
