  1. The Beauty of the Rain is Dar Williams' first recording that truly expands upon the sound of the album before it.
  2. It's probably a bolder, more daring record than it will ever be given credit for, as it's rare that an artist recognizes that she does some things very well, and then does them.
  3. 70
As lively as contemporary folk gets. [#14, p.144]
  4. Williams remains both ambitious and pleasingly plain-spoken.
  5. While Dar Williams's artistic trademarks--lyrical introspection, melodic warmth, an occasional tendency toward breathy vocal preciousness--remain much in evidence on this collection, the expanded musical support adds more rhythmic propulsion and layers of harmonies to the mix.
  6. Her most rounded album.... However, many lyrics have taken a sudden, baffling turn into mystical territory making this two steps forward and one back. [May 2003, p.114]
  7. 40
She's somehow too like several other singers and perhaps too unambitious a writer to immediately engage novitiates. [Mar 2003, p.114]
