The Early Years 1965-1972 is the sonic equivalent to background reading and extensive footnotes for their remarkable body of recorded work.

Because so much of this music is raw--it's alternately live, unfinished, and improvisatory--the box underscores how Pink Floyd were an underground band right up until Dark Side. Decades later, these recordings still feel boundless: this was music made without a destination in mind and the journey remains thrilling.

It's hard to imagine a more comprehensive collection from such an important group. [Dec 2016, p.98]

The ark-like box should provide serious leisure-time satisfaction for both longtime Floyd freaks and aspiring heads alike.

The audio material is an illuminating reflection of the group’s transition from pop copyists to psychedelic adventurers, en route to becoming champions of rock’s progressive faction. [Jan 2017, p.82]

The Early Years feels like a huge, essential slice of rock history, showing a band with the world at their feet who could, and did, go anywhere they pleased.

Anyone startled by what happened to Pink Floyd in the wake of Waters’ rancorous 80s departure, aghast at the sheer level of screw-you obduracy displayed by all parties, might consider the story The Early Years tells. As it turns out, they were always like that.

Pink Floyd may have become legends mostly with their albums after 1975, but that doesn't mean that their early stuff isn't legend material. They could have been legends on a different track easily with their strong psychedelic material. Full Review »

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. As soon as the internet gained momentum and fan forums abounded, the demand for rare Pink Floyd material – so long the preserve of fanzines and clandestine encounters at record fairs – went over the counter. The sharing of scarce tracks became the thing, often with the hope that one day they would see more light officially. Well, how about this?
For those who want the whole story and are happy to forgo some of the trimmings this Christmas, The Early Years 1965-1972 really is the Pink present that you won’t forget. At 27 discs (divided into seven volumes – and five replica 7”s no less), there is almost far too much here, but that, you feel, is its very raison d’etre. From the earliest Syd Barrett sessions in 1965, to their work for Roland Petit in 1972, The Early Years 1965- 1972 demonstrates that absolutely nothing went to waste and how match-fit they were for their global success with The Dark Side Of The Moon in 1973.
