The first two-thirds of this album are nearly flawless.... There are a couple of stumbles down the backstretch, though.

The critics may long for drama and scandal, but The Embers of Time often demonstrates that a simple life could be for the best. Here, it certainly makes for enjoyable listening.

Though it's a stretch to call it a happy album (from an artist who routinely pondered the dark side of his life), it's full of charm, wit, and guarded optimism as Rouse tells us a bit about his demons with an honesty that suggests some, if not all, of them are in his rear view mirror. If only therapy was this effective and entertaining for everyone.

Rouse uses his recent psychoanalysis sessions to question universal questions of our place in life as we age. That he does so with such beautifully crafted, hummable pop songs is a testament to his long established talents as one of America’s more overlooked singer/songwriters.
