  1. The New Year here occasionally let loose with a decidedly unreserved frenzy that is a joy to hear.
  2. The End is Near employs much of fans found so pleasant about Bedhead, particularly the impressive build-up of two and three bar melodies.
  3. Mojo
    60
Sleepy, certainly, but never tired. [Aug 2004, p.89]
  4. They combine the angular dread of Joy Division with the slow burn of the Velvet Underground (circa the third album), underpinned with some sinuous rock dynamics and topped off with laconic, sometimes languid vocals.
  5. The New Year's sound is fraught with contradictions, soft melodies and pretty strumming stretched over tricky rhythms and acerbic lyrics.
  6. This is one of the more straightforward and brutal assessments of people and relationships that I've heard in awhile, all set to vaguely dreary music that is pretty impeccable in construction.
  7. So, yeah, the New Year sounds an awful lot like Bedhead, but who can really complain?
  8. Despite the sonic and lyrical similarity to Newness Ends, the band has met the challenge head-on and crafted an exquisite album.
  9. Whatever excitement this album lends is, for the most part, borrowed by its pre-existing audience, and it's clear the Kadanes aren't going to challenge us.
  10. The Wire
    80
The Kadanes have created a collection of songs of which they can be proud. [#246, p.62]
  11. Their music is an amazing nexus where surgical precision, ace musicianship, and thrifty minimalism intertwine joyously.
  12. On The End is Near, the group seems to follow the same pattern as before, but with less than appetizing results.
  13. Alternative Press
    80
Delivers huge hooks, metronomic riffs and driving drumbeats, all of which enhance the Kadanes' amplified whispers. [Aug 2004, p.108]
