Stunning, dark, poetic. ... Chances are you won’t fall in love with this album immediately but images will liner in your head and you’ll be drawn back to it repeatedly and appreciate it more with each listen.

What reveals itself most obviously over the course of the album is that Henry performs these songs with an unflagging calm as if he has all the time in the world to script his legacy. Whether we are graced with Henry's presence for another 30 years, months, or days, he has left a rich tapestry of his own music and has lifted up so many other artists as to make his presence everlasting.

The Gospel according to Water hovers in a mystical space between country, folk and jazz, his literate lyrics providing the thread which holds it all together. [Dec 2019, p.85]

Though this isn't the cleanest and tidiest album of his career, the emotional honesty of this material is striking, and this is some of the boldest and most inspiring work of Joe Henry's career.

Striking enough on their own merits, free of embellishments, all the more powerful for the immediacy of the moment. Simplicity is the key here. [Jan 2020, p.26]
