  1. Throughout the album, Cole & co. offer up one pop nugget after another, all carefully honed through warts-and-all shows held in New York over the last few years. The result is that The Negatives isn't just Cole's most consistent disc in 11 years; it's also quite possibly his best ever.
  2. 80
A gentle, finely-wrought memory of an album, The Negatives won't change lives, but it will charm and occasionally haunt them.
  3. Cole, at age 40, seems comfortable with himself and his career -- quirks, blemishes, and all -- and one would be hard pressed to find any of his U.K. '80s contemporaries making such a strong, winningly melodic album... if they're still making albums at all.
  4. It seems hard to believe that the man who made this album is the same one responsible for the 1984's still splendid Rattlesnakes.
