  • Summary: A showcase for their record label Star Trak, 'Clones' is a compilation of 22 Neptunes-produced and/or performed tracks, featuring A-list artists such as Nelly, Busta Rhymes, P. Diddy, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg and Nas.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 16 out of 20
  2. Negative: 1 out of 20
  1. This gem glistens with bumpin' hits by Nelly, Clipse, Snoop Dogg and others.
  2. Its many high points and its sheer diversity (think of it as the ultimate pre-assembled mix tape) are enough to gloss over any minor transgressions.
  3. Ruthlessly, relentlessly refined, the surprise is that you don't get sick of what is, despite its surface changes, a fairly predictable formula. Rather, you want to hear it again. And again. And again.
  4. Seekers of weird and variegated musical kicks will certainly want to snap up Clones. [22/29 Aug 2003, p.130]
  5. There are, admittedly, times when it looks like they're just showing off.
  6. 70
The album is a tapestry of reggae, rock, jazz, gospel, and pop, loosely assembled on the duo’s signature bass-and-rim-shot skeleton.
  7. Clones testifies to how familiar (and hollow) the Neptunes’ studio tricks have become.

A very good cd with styles ranging from rap, rock and dancehall. Standouts include 'Frontin', 'Good girl', 'If', 'It blows my mind' (which does just that), 'Hot', 'Half-steering', 'Loser', 'Hot damn', 'Popular thug', and 'The don of dons'. Does have a few tracks tending to the filler direction though. Still, a good cd. Expand

While the singing / rapping at times lets you down, the music never veers off track. Who else could get away with the minimalism of #8 Hot??? Let's see if they can resurrect the King of Pop, surely the greatest challenge of their career! Expand

I reakon it is a fuck crap album! The beats and samples sound like they're straight off a workstation. It seems the neptunes think they shit don't stink. I loved the Nerd album and I really really dig all their past productions, but Clones is just plain plastic! Expand
