Of course this is a great record. Of course this is essential listening. At this point in his career he’s still getting better, and that’s a scary proposition.

The Night Chancers is Dury’s most accomplished work, its self awareness and innate understanding of genre and language shows the songwriter to be in the prime of his creativity.

Dury seems to have found a tone and groove that he's both relishing and flourishing in. [Apr 2020, p.27]

Six albums in, Baxter Dury has realised a sound and lyrical approach that is unmistakably his alone. [May 2020, p.101]

The Night Chancers tackles big themes within tight restrictions – namely, masculinity at the start of the 2020s. But though filmic in its scope, these 10 vignettes are economically plotted (the album is just 30 minutes long), with a through-line that takes you just far enough before leaving you to your own conclusions about these characters’ motives.
  6. 80
Extremely moody yet highly groovy sixth album.

Dury carries it off. His phrasemaking and delivery is immaculate: he plays with accents, albeit within a limited palette, and you listen to The Night Chancers believing it to be a real world.

Incredibly lyrical, warm and melodic album of a talented author and artist. He knows what he does and does it very well. His best album.

Even though I don't know Baxter Bury's career, this first aproachment to his music is not dificult to see that he is a very concious musician about the value of sensibility in the production and he uses it in his favor. Baxter uses a group of violines and a chorus to make that clear. His speeches about social prejudice, the subtle stalking and the compulsivity of belonguing or making someone belongs to you embelish the music that expresses freely. Between Baxter's voice, his lyrics and the music, theres a very sweet and sensible agreement in which they both help each other to express themselves with no interruptions. An interesting work and definitevily important for those who live in the shadow of the burocratic buildings, craving for a little of fullfilment.
