Although I much prefer his own work, this covers album has some great moments on it. The opening Rocky Road is as good as any version you'll hear. Perhaps he should have stayed away from the Pogues classic A Rainy Night in Soho. Hot Asphalt and Foggy Dew are also done well. Granted, it might be hard to appreciate the power of these ballads if your not Irish but it's great Dempsey hasAlthough I much prefer his own work, this covers album has some great moments on it. 1. The Rocky Road is well worthy of being mentioned alongside classic albums by the Dubliners and Planxty, and that's as big a compliment as it could be paid.
  2. Comprising 11 beautifully varied trad numbers, The Rocky Road is a big-hearted tribute to the enduring power of Irish folk songs.
  3. Perhaps the greatest compliment that could be paid The Rocky Road is to say it can easily be recommended alongside the best in the Dubliners and Luke Kelly’s catalogue, a distinction both Dempsey and Kelly would no doubt be delighted with.
