    Die-hard fans may appreciate the musical switcheroos on The Worm's Heart, but others may not understand the need for them.

    The Worm's Heart is a curiously pointless release and coming so soon after the first version does it no favors at all.

    It is, when it comes down to it, a sloppy gimmick. One, admittedly, that has a few choice moments, but which would have been much better served if Mercer had streamlined all his ideas down in the first place instead of treating these songs as malleable, never-finished opuses.

    I can only say The Shins have lost it. Their last good album was, Wincing the Night Away. There's been an odd good song here but it's mostlyI can only say The Shins have lost it.     I was excited to enjoy Heartworms in a new way, and was highly disappointed.
