    A powerfully uncomplicated rock album.

It's an album that might seem superficially bright and shiny, but the edges are sharper than they appear.

If you come to this record for the title, expecting rueful literacy and songwriterly self-deprecation, you might be pleasantly surprised by how hard it rocks and what an undemanding good time it can be.

The Year of Magical Drinking is a solid pop album in its own right, with all the economic hooks of a Fountains of Wayne record but none of that band's antiseptic production.

This music is surely reminiscent of his work with the Broken West, so as Apex Manor Flournoy hasn't reinvented himself. But he has found a new sharpness to his songs by, ironically, letting the reigns loose a little.

What the album lacks in focus, it makes up for in sheer listenability.

The Year of Magical Drinking strikes me as an album with something interesting to say, a quality only increased by knowing where Flournoy is coming from.
