There are times where Grieves really does resonate--whether talking about childhood, heartbreak, or other matters.

Grieves still knows how to make catchy, emotive indie rap with the best of them.

Grieves is more than game to match his collaborator's slick, itchy Okayplayerisms, switching between rapping and singing as his partner stacks up the soul chords and funk flourishes.

Effective as it is, that voice wears thin over the run of Together/Apart's 16 mostly guest-free tracks, as Grieves' interchangeable choruses and pensive verses about lost youth and addiction's pull begin to bleed together.

While producer Budo creates melancholy set pieces--from the funereal piano of "Bloody Poetry" to the soulful organ grinding of "Heartbreak Hotel"--Grieves shines as a friendly, thoughtful voice, gladly ready to share secrets.

Overall Together/Apart is a very good record, and a few minor missteps from being a great one.
  7. It's a decent addition to the artist's already impressive resume, but fails to arrest the same attention his earlier releases are famous for.

An easy recommendation for its obvious audience, but Together/Apart is a bit more than that as well, giving the genre of indie hip-hop some mass appeal whenever it decides to wild out.

Together/Apart is musical therapy for those who find themselves caught under the pressures of life.

Most of the tracks emulate what could be B-Sides of a post-Lemons Ant, doing nothing so groundbreaking as regurgitating mid-90's soul.

He and Budo's work together are a perfect match throughout the album. The lines are well crafted, and poignant, and the music is thoughtfully composed to match.
