The album feels as much a personal exploration of Adigéry’s own heritage and life experiences as it does a commentary on social attitudes. But, most importantly, it establishes Adigéry and Pupul as a real force to be reckoned with.

Topical Dancer is a record for literally anyone. It’s a tool as much as it is an escape hatch. Play this album for your grandparents, your parents, your children, your children’s children, and children yet to be born. For it’s a spiritual palette cleanser as much as it is a physical one.

A riveting debut from two artists whose music pokes you in the side as often as it makes you move.
  4. With ‘Topical Dancer’, they have created an album that works just as well as the soundtrack to a killer house party as it does a necessary act of rebellion against the negative forces in our society.

The words offer a lot of food for thought, but the music and arrangements are every bit as remarkable.

To call ‘Topical Dancer’ pure fun feels to diminish the real sentiment behind the lyrics; to pigeonhole it as wholly political does down the infectiousness that runs through its core.

Their debut album, co-written and co-produced with Soulwax, is a treasure chest of funk, French house, sweaty techno and all kinds of dirty electronic weirdness to rival Moloko at their freakiest. But their takes on the fraught subject of wokeness on Esperanto (“Don’t say: I would like a black Americano/ Say: I’ll have an African American, please”), or sexual agency on the Timbaland-flavoured dark R&B of Reappropriate err on the side of basic.

Charlotte's presence is very assured as she moves from narratives of first being sexualized at thirteen by stranger's to just eating food to catch a boys attention . There is an attentive nature to this record where it's as if she's not harmed by any if these narratives just frustrated her alot. The aforementioned is apparently on the sharp higlight "Esperanto " which begins with posing questions such as "are you polite or political?" into an amused recitation of micro aggressions "don't say I want a black americano say I want an African American " and you just can't help but laugh as you see the flaws in your own political correctness. As such is this record that demands close attention for it's idiosyncrasies to unfold. Like the pops and claps that hide under the surface of every beat or the laugher placed in "HAHA". This is an impressive release that invests me into whatever comes next. Expand
