Jun 15, 2017Throughout Towards Language, the emergent notion of "slow jazz"--music that unfolds deliberately in a communal context rather than the accepted soloist and accompaniment formula--is almost defined. Its individual utterances are elementary building blocks that collectively move toward an artfully realized goal of musical speech. It achieves its power from the sum total of its sounds and atmospheres. Magnificent.

The WireAug 8, 2017Whether with Supersilent or on his own, Arve Henriksen has demarcated his own world of sound, communicating in ways that are sometimes inscrutable but always deeply felt. [Jul 2017, p.53]

MojoJun 27, 2017The results are largely sublime. [Aug 2017, p.91]
-
UncutJun 12, 2017Henriksen's flute-like playing has a uniquely spittled, raspy quality that lends it a rare vulnerability. [Jul 2017, p.30]

Jun 12, 2017If you’re looking for glacial Nordic chills, Arve Henriksen’s hauntingly beautiful Towards Language will do the trick.

Jun 12, 2017The melancholy saunter of Henriksen’s lines is isolated and sculpted by glimmering, whirring atmospheres full of emptiness and portent. Testing different ways to contrast eloquent material and enigmatic medium, the record plays like some lost collaboration between Wynton Marsalis and Brian Eno circa Ambient 4: On Land.

Jun 12, 2017The sonic atmosphere he creates with sample-manipulators Jan Bang and Erik Honoré can be faintly terrifying--the three of them should be given a horror movie soundtrack immediately--but also occasionally beautiful.
