Left to his own devices, Bates's skittering effects and big, cavernous soundscapes can leave a metallic aftertaste like a mouthful of antibiotics, but the album's female guests--including Norwegian singer-songwriter Susanne Sundfør--provide the blood for Trágame Tierra's big, beating heart.

It is chocked full of majestic pop hooks, but these are offset by ad-hoc rhythms and synths. Trágame Tierra is a remarkable album, but you’ve got to give it a chance.

Bates sounds separate from Gibbs; their aural love affair falls flat. Bates will have to soldier on behind Big Black Delta, and hopefully with more time and experience he can break through and deliver the kind of emotional overtures he’s only just hinted at.

On Trágame Tierra, Bates is both audacious and original, two qualities that are hard to fault. But in the absence of focus, listening to Trágame Tierra can feel like looking for dinner in a candy store: there's a lot of brightly-colored packaging to take in but not much you can really sink your teeth into.

As a whole this record is better and a lot more consistent than Bates' debut studio effort, but there is no match for some of his best songsAs a whole this record is better and a lot more consistent than Bates' debut studio effort, but there is no match for some of his best songs like Capsize and IFUСKINGLOVEYOU. It's OK and Strange Cakes are a pair of really lovely songs, though, and RCVR is a fantastic 80's throwback with an immensely catchy vocal line and great drums. Overlord is something different entirely, with more Scandinavian-leaning beats, and the song Well My Heart even borders on Americana, but somehow mixes that in with the signature electro sound that the Big Black Delta project has become known for. No masterpiece, but recommended nonetheless. Full Review »
