Ty Segall itself reveals--even more so than Emotional Mugger and Manipulator before it--a willingness to park the DIY or garage rock tag, however momentarily.

It’s a zany but melodically substantial record, in which the best songs (Thank You Mr K, Freedom) sit somewhere between the oeuvres of the Lemonheads and the Ramones.

This is the logical culmination of all of Ty's previous releases. Listen to the 10 minute opus "Warm Hands (Freedom Returned)" and tell meThis is the logical culmination of all of Ty's previous releases. Listen to the 10 minute opus "Warm Hands (Freedom Returned)" and tell me that this isn't some of the best material Ty has ever released. You could just feel this sort of an album waiting to be unleashed on the world after last years crazy and delightfully zany "Emotional Mugger", and here it is in all it's (self-titled) glory. Nice having his road band backing him on this album, it made a huge difference on "Slaughter House". Lots of face melting guitar work.
