Tunes abound, performances are slick, and all 13 songs boast a hook or two. [Jan 2018, p.88]

There are a few misses here but Unleash The Love is a fun upbeat song that bounces along with the help of a choir, and both Pisces Brother and Cool Head, Warm Heart are strong ballads that sit comfortably in the live set of the touring Beach Boys. ... Disc Two is a head scratcher.

Lackluster as music and downright puzzling as a cultural artifact, Unleash the Love confirms that whatever you think of Mike Love's 21st century edition of the Beach Boys, he's better off doing that than trying to make music by himself.

The lyrics are packed with so many trite clichés that you can’t help but wince, whether he’s wishing for world peace on Make Love Not War (which manages to make room for the Trump-supporting Love to thank the USA ‘and all the folks protecting us very day’), dredging up seafaring love metaphors on Too Cruel or fashioning sappy eco ballads like Only One Earth.

An unctuous solo album mixing flaccid new songs with slick retreads of classics. [Jan 2018, p.24]

Unleash The Love is steeped in this kind of smugness, aptly embodied in the rolled-up-jacket-sleeves ersatz ‘80s funk-pop of tracks like “I Don’t Wanna Know”. The “bonus” album of reheated Beach Boys hits, meanwhile, simply stains one’s precious memories.
